Thruxton delivers a battle!

16/09/2007

Aaron Steele

The penultimate Round of the 2007 BARC Formula Renault Championship at Thruxton on Sunday 16th September provided probably one of the best races of the season!

Qualifying in the morning for round 11 found Aaron was compromised on his best lap, by one of the Club Class runners through the last chicane, costing Aaron dearly and resulting in P7, however although very frustrated Aaron was remained up-beat quoting "Being Thruxton it's really not that crucial, if I can get a good start the tows you get round here are amazing! On my last visit here in 2005 in Formula BMW I managed to slipstream and pass 4 cars in one move!"

As the race got underway Aaron did indeed move up to 4th before hitting the complex, as the field reached the chicane on lap one, leading Rossi's (Worswick Engineering) car expired, which slightly compromised the chasing pack apart from Hywel Lloyd (CFS Racing) who was able to avoid Rossi's sudden halt, gaining a big advantage, this left a pack of 5 all fighting for the same bit of track, Hancock (Burdett Motorsport), Stoneman (Team Alpine), Mcdonald (Eurotek), Steele (Double M Racing) & Mun of Korea (Eurotek).

What followed was a battle of mind, matter, grit, guts & sheer bravery, positions not only changed, but changed constantly during each lap. Aaron progressed up to 3rd at one stage behind Lloyd & McDonald, getting his nose in front of Hancock at the Chicane, however running wide on the exit compromised Aaron allowing Hancock to retake the 3rd position, Aaron then settled in to a race long duel with Stoneman, swapping positions up to 4 times a lap! However Stoneman managed to retake & defend that 4th position to the line, taking that extra point and consolodating his lead over Lloyd in the Championship with one round to go at Oulton Park on September 29th, Aaron's 5th place now leaves him in 6th place in the Championship.

Although it would have been nice to be on the podium, Aaron quoted that this was his most enjoyable race of the year!

Preperations for the final round at Oulton Park (Round 12) will commence this week, with testing at the Cheshire venue this Friday (21st), Aaron and the whole team wanting a strong finish and hopefully that so deserved first win, lets hope that the elements all come together! Aaron's last visit in June (Round 4) saw him put it on Pole, unfortunately contact with Hancock (Burdett Motorsport) on lap one ended his race.
